Enjoying the Yarra River

We look after rivers and creeks in the Port Phillip and Westernport area. We also help local councils to ensure the rivers and creeks in their areas are clean.

Our main responsibilities for rivers and creeks are to:

  • Improve the health of our rivers and creeks
  • Release environmental flows from reservoirs
  • Monitor the health and water quality of rivers and creeks
  • License and managing diverters who draw water from catchments.

We manage 8000 kilometres of waterways including:

  • 677 kilometres of modified waterways and channels
  • 99 natural and constructed wetlands
  • 153 monitoring stations on waterways and drains
  • 230 sediment traps
  • 69 litter traps
  • 54 urban lakes.

We are also responsible for 1277 kilometres of stormwater drains in the Port Phillip and Westernport area.

Our goals are to:

  • Ensure healthy rivers and creeks, with increased numbers of native fish, platypus and plants
  • Ensure rivers, creeks and wetlands continue to be a hub for recreation and that our communities actively participate in improving their condition
  • By 2025, all natural rivers and creeks will be in good or better condition.
